They are completely separate from the main scuba set and exist in case of a malfunction or if they should exhaust their primary gas supplies. Make sure to take into consideration the environment in which you will be diving when you select your scuba diving gear. But either way, be very sure you have a firm understanding of how the individual devices and components work.
